Cross City Sprayfield Expansion, Town of Cross City, FL
The Town of Cross City operates an effluent sprayfield, which is used to reclaim treated wastewater from the Town’s single sewer plant. WET Engineering recently designed, permitted, and provided bidding and construction administration services on the 30 acre expansion which will accommodate the concentrate flows from the membrane upgrade at the water plant. The expansion included adding four additional irrigation zones, 164 spray heads, and approximately 16,000 ft of HDPE pipe, varying between 3“and 10”. HDPE pipe was used in this application because of its flexibility in routing irrigation lines around large diameter trees.
Project challenges included: permitting the concentrate disposal through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection; obtaining authorization to work in the existing Progress Energy of Florida easement; coordinating the relocation of several gopher tortoises; flagging and identifying existing wetlands; working on a “treed” sprayfield and minimizing the impacts to existing large diameter trees; and timing construction to sequence the project with the water plant upgrades.
The expansion was funded through the Department of Community Affair’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. The sprayfield expansion will be on-line in November 2011.
